Macrame, patchwork technique and pearl embroidery

Chloe, Jil Sander, Jacquemus — all of them offer this season things with elements of needlework. We are getting acquainted with the main trends of manual art techniques.

Altuzarra: tops in the macrame technique 

Once, knotting was endowed with mystical meaning, and in Ancient Rome even prohibited this type of needlework because of associations with witchcraft. Then the Europeans decided that it was still very beautiful, and began to weave napkins, tablecloths, curtains and garments. Since the 1970s, weaving, in particular macrame, has been associated with hippie culture. But in the Altuzarra collection, braided tops look fresh and relevant — especially when they are worn over strict jackets. 

Chloe: Customized bag

Chloe’s creative director Gabriela Hurst has come up with a great idea on how to update a worn-out bag. You can decorate the accessory with long threads or sew it with knitted elements. The designer carried out her experiments on bringing old things back to life on the Chloé Edith bag, which was invented by Phoebe Filo while working at the French brand. Hearst bought fifty of these bags on Ebay and customized them.  

Jil Sander: Crocheted dresses and suits

With the arrival of Luke and Lucy Meyer at Jil Sander, the minimalist brand is increasingly associated with needlework. In the latest collections of designers there are embroidery with beads, beads, French knots, as well as many crocheted things. In winter, we admired the soulful knitted scarves from the men’s collection of the brand, and by summer we want to get dresses and suits in the croche technique — to wear them over a swimsuit. 

Batsheva: contrasting edging on the coat 

One detail — and now, even the most boring coat in the wardrobe appears texture and character. Keep in mind that it is a big and painstaking job to carefully trim all coats, including cuffs, pockets and collar, with a contrasting lace. But judging by the lookbook of the New York brand Batsheva, it’s worth it. 

Jacquemus: Pearl-embroidered knitwear

Simon Port Jacmus held the spring-summer 2022 collection show on the Hawaiian island of Oahu: models walked on an azure catwalk stretched right along the beach. The most spectacular things from the show are knitwear embroidered with irregular shaped river pearls. This idea can be taken as a guide to action if you want to give life to an old jumper or hide a clue. 

Bode: patchwork technique

Designer Emily Bode collects pieces of antique fabrics all over the world and makes simple silhouettes of them, but unusually lively and emotional things. Emily came up with these jackets under the impression of vintage wool patchwork quilts — Bode items are hand-assembled in small pieces and are very inspiring to do needlework.
